# Last ditch effort for laptop install...

## chevymoon

Hi.

I've got Gentoo installed on my new Dell Inspiron 1100. The only major hiccup at this time is X. For the past week I've been scouring the forums and the net to find a way to get X to take up the entirety of my screen with no joy. Please if anyone can tell me specifically which kernel options need to be selected and which options in XF86Config should be selected, I would be happy. Otherwise, I will likely have to revert to XP. I have honestly tried dozens (literally) of combinations in the kernel (enabling and disabling AGPGART, DRM...) and a myriad of XF86Config files (my own and many off the net. I'm at my wit's end. Please don't "RTFM" me; I'm sincere when I say that I have been there and done that.

Specs:

 i845GL Extreme Graphics Video

14.1 inch Active Matrix TFT

2.0 Celeron

128 DDR RAM

I could try to post my XF86Config and kernel config files, but I'm not sure how to make that happen.

Thanks for your help.

Edit1:

I should add that I have a desktop system with Gentoo running on it for the past year. I love it, and I very much want this to work on the laptop. I just can't handle my X configuration. Also, please find my latest XF86Config and .config files.

I had a laptop and installed debian, gentoo, slackware and some other distributions during the years on it, and i had that problem a lot of times.. when you configure X, it asks your for a resolution, and you can take 2 or 3 of them, just in case first choice fails, X can use the second one. You have to avoid that, enter *just* 1024x768 mode, in all color depths.

By the way, your video card requires XFree86 4.3.0 or higher, and the module for it it's called "i810".. The official intel drivers for your card are located in this URL (where you also have a nice install how-to): http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/linux/graphics.htm

As you see, i spent some time with these post.. so try to fix and never, NEVER revert to XP

Good Luck!

----------

## asph

i forgot something about the kernel.. when you compile it make sure you enter "Character Devices" and select (not as "M" but as "*") "/dev/agpgart (AGP) support" and select the appropriate sub-option of "/dev/agpgart (AGP) support" (again not as a module "M" but as a static part of the kernel "*"), namely the "I810/I810 dc100I810e support" part. That will allow you to compile the kernel with the i810 support (instead of this, you can use the intel drivers by compiling them as kernel modules - read intel drivers readme)

----------

## chevymoon

You probably noticed that I didn't have the AGP enabled in my kernel .config. That was the last thing I tried, before posting.

What about DRI? Do I enable it in the kernel, or do I use the xfree-drm ebuild?

----------

## asph

you can use the xfree dri (as you can see in the xf86config file i posted)

Also take a deep look at this webpage, where you can get various install guides of linux in your specific laptop:

http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/dell.html

----------

## chevymoon

Ok. I recompiled my kernel, enabling AGP. No luck. I'm using your XF86Config file verbatim. I've checked that guide before (all of them).

the error is ...

No Video BIOS modes for chosen depth.

----------

## chevymoon

I just noticed that I needed to redo the intel dripkg install. I did that, but still no love.

New error though:

Fatal Server error:

Caught Signal 11. Server aborting.

Edit: This is a startx error.

----------

## chevymoon

I'm going to try a different kernel - ac-sources. Some folks in the forums seem to feel it's the best option for laptops. It seems to have a newer linux kernel.

----------

## chevymoon

ok, i'm back to gaming-sources, as the change didn't seem to help. now i'm re-emerging xfree. Has anyone else seen this "Caught Signal 11" error? What causes it?

----------

## chevymoon

Alright, folks. I believe I'm close. If I run XFree86 -configure, and then run the test afterwards (XFree86 -configure /root/XF86Config.new). I get the X cursor on a grey background, and it takes up the whole screen. If I then move that new config file to /etc/X11/XF86Config, and startx, I get the "No Video BIOS modes..." error. Why would that be?

----------

## wwgamma

Coincidently, I just re-installed gentoo on my inspiron 1100. I've got most of it working perfectly now for the first time considering I could never get x working right before. I bootstraped it with gcc3.3.1, am using the 2.6.0test4 kernel, and xfree4.3.99.11. The trick I think was xfree4.3.11 although the new kernel probably had something to do with it too. If you're still having problems, I'll post my .config and XF86Config files. I got the xfree4.3.99.11 ebuild https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21127. If you bootstrap with gcc3.3.1, you'll run into some problems too. Good luck.

----------

## chevymoon

I'm afraid it's too late for me. I've probably spent upwards of 30 hours this past week just trying to get X configured. I'm a family man, so that kind of time does not come without a price. I've decided to give up for the time being and just go with XP. I don't like it, but I don't have the time to deal with what seems to be an impossible situation.

I thought it might involve a bleeding edge kernel. And, as you say, the unstable software upgrades would present problems of their own. As I said before, I've got Gentoo on my desktop at home, and I've done my share of kernel building and file tweaking. But this laptop thing whipped me, which is why I came here for some help.

[Prepare for short rant]

As you can see from my profile, I've been using Gentoo for over a year , and I've only initiated two or three posts. That's because, by and large, I've found all the answers I've needed by doing some thorough searches of the forums and the net. And I'm sure it get's tiring for the forum folk to have to answer the same, tired old "X ain't workin'" crap. Unfortunately, for folks who have tried to go about it the right way but haven't posted a gazillion times in the forum, the tendency seems to be that they are lumped in to a "he just hasn't looked hard enough" category. I can appreciate a little of that as I said, but I came here in a "last ditch effort" to keep Linux on my laptop, Gentoo in particular. And while I don't feel it's anyone's fault really, I have to admit to being a little frustrated that more help wasn't forthcoming. What else should I have done? The several dozen (literally) different XF86Config files I tried BEFORE posting didn't work, and neither did the several dozen (literally) I tried after my initial post. I can't say I didn't learn anything from that, and there were positives gained from the dozen times (literally) that I re-compiled my kernel.

I'm not flaming at the forums. They've been a huge help over the past year. I guess I'm frustrated that my laptop doesn't have Gentoo on it, and I did everything I know to do about it. If there was anything I should have done differently, please let me know.

## rpmessne

Just to let you know, if you're using the A22 bios (i'm lucky enough to get one with the A06) on this laptop, you're pretty much not going to get your video card working with linux.. it's horribly mangled for some reason. If there's a newer bios version coming in the next couple of week, you might want to try your install again.

## spyder

if it will start x, but only run in 640x480... make sure to run this patch

http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/845patch.tar.gz

http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html

----------

## infinii

goes to show...do your homework before buying hardware, especially if you intend on using linux.

there are dedicated websites that will tell you what works, doesn't work, patches, kluges, problems to expect for certain hardware and linux distributions.

as the above poster indicated, the bios on this is strange and it maybe what's causing your video problems under X.

Did you take a look at this...

http://geocities.com/randomnumbergenerator2001/

Not telling you to rtfm because you obviously have done so. But you're fooling yourself if you think Linux is mainstream enough that you can just plop in a cd and install it on any hardware without hassle. Some h/w is better suited and some not, do yourself a favour and buy what works. This is also best way to vote with your wallet and let vendors realize that their crappy proprietary h/w that doesnt have decent linux support, is not wanted.

----------

## madCoder|GN

He has actually solved this problem, according to this topic: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=93646 (which is also the topic that saved me  ) X looks great now, with that patch, and there's talk that version XFree 4.4 will support this chipset sans patch.

----------

## chevymoon

I have indeed got it working. :Very Happy: Sorry I didn't post a follow-up here earlier. The patch does work, but I'm hoping that XFree does support this chipset in the future. 3D is very iffy. Quake2 is functional but not particularly enjoyable.
