# ICH7 IDE/SATA Problems, x86_64, kernel 2.6.21-r4 [SOLVED]

## splurben

G’day. I have an ASUS P5LD2-SE (BIOS v.1104, most recent) with a Pentium 4 (Nocona) 3GHz processor.

The motherboard has 4 SATA ports and 2 IDE ports. I have two PIONEER DVD-DL-RW drives, one is SATA and one is IDE. The BIOS recognises both of them and is employing "Enhanced Mode" which lists both the drives as IDE devices. The BIOS doesn't have an option for AHCI SATA (even though the documentation lists another option -- AHCI/RAID -- which I don't have available for some reason).

I have a SATA RAID running.

I’ve just upgraded the kernel from 2.6.20-r8 to 2.6.21-r4 to try to improve the SATA functionality.

In kernel 2.6.20-r8, the IDE drive functioned perfectly, but the SATA drive wouldn't recognise very many media types (media types the documentation claims it will recognise).

Now in 2.6.21-r4 the IDE chain is completely useless and the SATA drive still has similar limited functionality.

BIOS reports:

```
Primary IDE Master
   Device: ATAPI CD-ROM
   Vendor: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-110D
Fourth IDE Slave: (this is the SATA drive)
   Device: ATAPI CD-ROM
   Vendor: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-212
```

```
IDE Configuration
   Configure SATA as [Standard IDE] (AHCI/RAID isn't available)
   Onboard IDE Operate Mode [Enhanced Mode]
      Enhanced Mode Support On [S-ATA+P-ATA]
```

IDE errors from DMESG:

```
ide-cd: cmd 0x3 timed out
hda: lost interrupt
hda: request sense failure: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: request sense failure: error=0x40 { LastFailedSense=0x40 }
hda: lost interrupt
```

and I’m assuming these BOOT messages are related

```
irq 22: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)
LSHW hangs on IDE when I try to use it.
If anyone can help with this it would be greatly appreciated. I am not completely au fait with the IDE/SATA distinctions being made in the BIOS and I know there are two SATA handlers for the kernel and I just don't have enough experience in this area to know how to proceed debugging this.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you,
hi splurben!
i have a few questions about your config:
1. how did you realize your sata raid?? is it sw-raid?
2. how many sata hdd's do you use?
3. is there a way to jumper the sata config on your mainboard?
IHMO your config seems to be ok, but can you post your complete kernel config??
could you also post the messages during boot before and after the irq22 error message?
greets
snIP3r
The RAID is a software raid, md3 is my root partition.
I have three (3) SATA hard drives.
No jumpers for SATA config on MB, nor for 'expert' level access to BIOS. (I wonder if the SATA BIOS options are affected by the attachment of the SATA DVD?)
Complete kernel config then DMESG from last boot:
## snIP3r
hi!
i did a little search adn found out that this might be a bios issue. take a look here:
http://osdir.com/ml/ide/2005-10/msg00068.html
and here:
http://plutohome.com/support/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?p=1600#1600
it is suggested to switch back to legacy mode in bios.
did you have the same problems when booting a live cd?
what happens if you use only a single drive (the PATA _or_ the SATA, not both at the same time)?
I'll have to wait a bit to try these suggestions. I'll have to take the machine down and move it to get access to the innards.
I suspect the BIOS is responsible as well. I'll move the SATA DVD-RW onto a PCI SATA card and leave just hard drives on the internal SATA.
This still doesn't really explain why the ICH7 IDE goes remiss when I change from 2.6.20-r8 to 2.6.21-r4. But we'll just have to see.
Cheers and thanks for the help,
Kirk
DISABLED ACPI, DISABLED ALL ACPI and ALL BETTER, THANK GOODNESS!
Upgraded to 2.6.22-r2 yesterday.
No more SATA weirdness.
(Although I'll have to say, I'm still a bit confused about the seemingly redundant but different kernel options, IDE ATA, S-ATA, P-ATA. And some motherboard manufacturers are a bit vague in the documentation, I still can't get my motherboard to allow "Native AHCI" in the BIOS, even though I'm on the latest BIOS, and I've checked the printed and on-line documentation and I only have SATAII hard drives attached to the SATA ports.)
